Hello, Alabama Baptists. Let me tell you, I’m fascinated with bridges. I travel a lot, so I travel over a lot of bridges. Recently, I thought about what bridges really mean in terms of Alabama Baptist history. This fall, we celebrate our 200th anniversary and it’s a time for us to reflect on the past and be able to project to the future.
Paul had that in mind in his own personal life when he said in Philippians 3:13-14, paraphrasing a bit, this one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind, not letting them dominate me for the future — forgetting those things which are behind, I reach forward to those things in the future. I press toward the prize of the upward calling of God. That’s our theme verse for this November celebration.
Bridges in the past and present and future could be summarized this way. We can take the raw material of what’s happened in the past, learn from mistakes, the best of the past, use that raw material to build a bridge to the future to a better future. Alabama Baptists, that’s my desire, that’s my hope, and I know it’s yours too. Let’s join together in November in good numbers to have fellowship together. Thanking God for what he’s done in the past and anticipating what he’s going to do in the future!
