As our 250th anniversary as a country draws to a close in terms of our celebration, it might be time for us to think even more about the rich history of the United States and how God has blessed us. After the US Constitution was ratified, one Benjamin Franklin, very eminent and prominent in the founding of our country, was asked by a socialite, Elizabeth Willing Powell. This was her question she posed, she said, “Dr. Franklin, do we have a republic or a monarchy?” And he responded in a quipped form which was very attributable to him, characteristic of him. He said, “You have a republic if you can keep it.”
Every generation of Americans, we’ve had to keep the republic. We have been blessed, but yet we’re stewards of this moment, and I pray that the multiple generations alive today in this time in which we have celebrated our history in such a unique fashion for 250 years, may we look to the future, understanding we have responsibility under God and for the good of the people to keep our republic.
