I have always been intrigued by the Gospels’ record of key moments in the life of Simon Peter:
- being called as one of Christ’s disciples.
- being commended by Christ.
- being rebuked by Christ when it was needed.
But by the time of writing the two Bible books that bear his name, Peter is a mature disciple – one who has become more disciplined in faith.
In 1 Peter 4:7 (NKJV), he simply writes, “Be serious and watchful in your prayers.” Some translations say that means to be clear-minded or clear-headed so that you can pray with focus. The word “watchful” can mean self-controlled or disciplined.
There is no better time than right now to be serious in prayer. F. B. Meyer said many years ago, “The greatest tragedy of life is not unanswered prayer, but unoffered prayer.”
Corrie ten Boom once asked, “Is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”
