Pray Without Ceasing

“Pray without ceasing.” 1 Thessalonians 5:17

At times, this verse has been challenging for me as I’ve pondered it for most of my adult life. How is it possible to pray without ceasing?

One day, it dawned on me that praying without ceasing means that our walk with God is so close, so genuine, that we can enter a time of prayer with Him at any time.

Certainly, with spiritual discipline, we can plan quiet times with the Lord each day. But even during the daily, mundane routines of life, we need to always be ready to pray.

Even when operating an automobile – although not with closed eyes! – each of us can pray. I call this “prayer driving.”

Praying without ceasing will be the focus of our next online Call to Prayer at 10 a.m. Wednesday, April 29.

I am grateful for the hundreds of Alabama Baptists who have participated in these online prayer gatherings for the past several weeks. Pastors, associational missionaries, other church staff, and church members have participated, and I hope many more will do so.

Because of the COVID-19 global pandemic, there has never been a greater moment of need to pray without ceasing.

So when we gather online for prayer next Wednesday, let’s focus on 1 Thessalonians 5:17 with the joy and confidence that we can call upon God anytime and that we should.
