Call to Prayer – Week 8

Video Transcript:

I’ve always been intrigued by the life of Simon Peter. From his calling to be a disciple, to the commendations the Lord gave him and yes, the condemnation that he gave him when it was needed. But by the time he writes 1st and 2nd Peter, he’s a mature disciple, one who has been disciplined in faith.

In one place, 1 Peter 4:7, he simply, in that phrase says, “be serious and watchful in prayer.” Well, how do you be serious in prayer? Other translations say that means to be clear-minded or clear-headed so that you can pray with focus. The word watchful could mean self-controlled or disciplined.

There’s no better time, I think, for us, than right now, to be serious in prayer. F.B. Meyer said, many years ago, “the greatest tragedy in prayer is not unanswered prayer, “it’s unoffered prayer.” To be watchful reminds us that we are to be circumspect, we are to be disciplined in prayer. Corrie ten Boom said years ago, “is prayer your steering wheel or your spare tire?”

Our next online call to prayer will focus on being serious and watchful in prayer. Join us as we, for about 20 minutes, seek the Lord in being serious and watchful in prayer.
